Washington city officials warned attendees of Wednesday’s protest to leave their guns at home. As a precaution, the city has called in the support of more than 300 National Guard troops to prevent rioting and violence during the planned demonstration dubbed “Stop the Steal.”
Police Chief Robert Contee said during a news conference that they had received reports of some individuals planning to bring firearms. He said that anyone caught with a firearm and those provoking violence will be arrested.
The DC National Guard said Monday that its forces will be joining the US Capitol Police, the US Secret Service, fire and rescue service, and the US Park Police to control the crowd during the rally.
Officials said that Wednesday’s rally is expected to be much bigger than those held in November and December. Previous rallies were marred with brawls and stabbings. Police had to arrest dozens of protesters during the various rallies attended by far-right nationalist groups.
US President Donald Trump had sent out an invite to all of his supporters to gather in Washington during the congressional meeting to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win.
Trump said on Sunday that he will definitely be attending the event. He also told his followers that the event “will be wild.” Apart from the rally outside of the US Congress, several other pro-Trump rallies are being organized.
