A gunman opened fire inside a midtown Manhattan office building Monday, killing an off-duty police officer and four others before taking his own life, according to law enforcement officials. The attack, which unfolded in a high-rise on 52nd Street and Park Avenue, also left a second officer wounded and sent the building’s occupants scrambling for cover.
The shooting began in the building’s lobby, where the suspect, reportedly armed with a rifle, fired multiple rounds. He then moved to another floor, continuing the assault, before reaching the 33rd floor where he turned the weapon on himself. Authorities said surveillance footage showed the gunman entering the premises wearing sunglasses and carrying what appeared to be a long gun.
The off-duty NYPD officer who was killed had been working as a private security guard at the building, which houses offices for both Blackstone and the National Football League. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of families.
Law enforcement sources confirmed that in addition to the officer killed, one other officer was shot but survived. Three civilians also died in the attack. The motive remains under investigation, and officials have not said whether the victims were targeted or randomly selected.
During the incident, people inside the building took shelter wherever they could — hiding in bathrooms, kitchens, and offices while awaiting rescue. Officers from the NYPD and the Sheriff’s Department, wearing protective gear and with weapons drawn, moved floor by floor to clear the building. Officials initially searched for the possibility of a second suspect, though none was found.
City officials issued a shelter-in-place warning for the surrounding area, urging residents and office workers to avoid the vicinity while the investigation continued. The city’s emergency alert system also warned of significant disruptions to traffic and public transportation.
New York Mayor Eric Adams, in a message posted online, advised residents near Park Avenue and East 51st Street to remain indoors and follow safety instructions. Attorney General Letitia James and other public officials expressed concern for the victims and praised the emergency response.
Federal agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, have joined the investigation. While the NYPD is leading the case, FBI agents were present to assist with scene coordination and background inquiries. Authorities have not publicly speculated on a motive but say they are reviewing the suspect’s digital footprint and interviewing witnesses.
