Vermont State Trooper Under Federal Investigation For Fake Vaccine Card Scam

The Vermont State Police said in a statement Tuesday that three Vermont state troopers are now under federal investigation for their suspected involvement in a counterfeit COVID-19 vaccination card scam.

Shawn Sommers, Raymond Witkowski, and David Pfindel, all of whom have been identified, are accused of playing various roles in the manufacture of fake cards.

Sommers and Witkowski resigned on Aug. 10, one day after another trooper expressed concerns with their supervisors about their behavior, according to authorities. After an inquiry by the Department of Public Safety, Pfindel resigned on September 3rd.

“The accusations, in this case, involve an extraordinary level of misconduct — a criminal violation of the law — and I could not be more upset and disappointed,” Vermont State Police director, Col. Matthew T. Birmingham, said.

State police superiors said they quickly submitted the claims to federal law enforcement after learning of the former troopers’ alleged behavior.

The case had been submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Attorney’s Office in Burlington by state police. Due to an ongoing FBI investigation, police were unable to provide any details about the event before Tuesday’s announcement.
