Alanis Morissette has criticized a new documentary on her life, calling it “salacious” and “reductive.” The documentary chronicled Morissette’s life and career, including her experience of being raped as a teenager.
The 47-year-old singer appeared in ‘Jagged’ to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her record ‘Jagged Little Pill,’ but she slammed Alison Klayman’s film only hours before its Toronto International Film Festival debut.
“This is when I knew our visions were, in fact, painfully diverged. This was not the story I agreed to tell. I sit here now experiencing the full impact of having trusted someone who did not warrant being trusted,” Morissette said.
Because of her continuing tour and her belief that the final film contains errors, the ‘Ironic’ hitmaker has declined to attend any of the documentary’s events.
The singer said the documentary, like many other’ stories and unofficial biographies out there throughout the years, has connotations and facts that are “simply not true.”
In the documentary, Morissette admitted to being the victim of multiple statutory rapes when she was just 15 years old. She said she attended years of therapy to admit that she was a victim.
I would always say I was consenting, and then I’d be reminded like ‘Hey, you were 15, you’re not consenting at 15.’ Now I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, they’re all pedophiles. It’s all statutory rape,’” Morissette said in the documentary.
Klayman was saddened by the singer’s absence from the premiere and wants to work with her again in the future.
