Box Office Recovery: The Hunger Games Prequel Crosses $100 Million Mark

Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” accomplished a monumental feat by crossing the $100 million mark domestically within its 11th day of release. Impressively, the movie also achieved the $100 million milestone in international markets, culminating in a global total of $200 million.

This remarkable success signifies the second film for Lionsgate this year, following “John Wick: Chapter 4,” to reach the $100 million milestone. Notably, “Songbirds & Snakes” stands as the 23rd movie in 2023 to surpass this benchmark, a significant increase compared to the 18 films that achieved this feat in 2022.

Amid the recent box office performances, “Songbirds & Snakes” demonstrated resilience despite a decline of 71% from Sunday’s $6.6 million to a gross of $1.9 million. The prequel, helmed by Francis Lawrence as the fourth film in the Suzanne Collins series, astounded during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Securing the top position, it amassed a 3-day revenue of $29 million and a 5-day total of $42.2 million, surpassing newcomers “Disney’s Wish” ($31.6 million) and “Apple Original Production’s Napoleon” ($32.7 million).

Anticipating a potential -55% decline in its third weekend, with a projected 3-day gross of around $13 million, industry sources suggest “Songbirds & Snakes” may maintain its momentum, potentially claiming the top spot for a third consecutive week. Despite the arrival of AMC’s “Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce,” the pre-sales for the latter film remain notably low, hinting at the potential for “Songbirds & Snakes” to retain its dominance.

Moreover, in comparison to “Mockingjay Part 2,” “Songbirds & Snakes” showcased a better hold with a decline of -35% post-Black Friday frame, compared to -63% for its predecessor. The prequel also trails the second “Fantastic Beasts” movie by 15%, hinting at a potential final gross surpassing $150 million, exceeding its production cost of just over $100 million.
