Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico, are investigating the deaths of Academy Award-winning actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, after they were found unresponsive in their home under circumstances officials have described as suspicious.
Deputies from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check on Wednesday, where they discovered the couple deceased, along with one of their dogs. Two other dogs were found alive inside the residence.
According to law enforcement, there were no immediate signs of trauma, and the cause of death remains undetermined. Initial autopsy reports showed no external injuries, and authorities are awaiting toxicology and carbon monoxide test results to determine potential contributing factors.
Unclear Circumstances Surrounding Their Deaths
Investigators noted several details that raised questions about what transpired. Hackman was reportedly found on the floor of the home’s mudroom, while Arakawa was discovered in a bathroom with a space heater nearby. A search warrant affidavit indicated that her body showed signs of decomposition, suggesting she had been deceased for some time before being found. An open prescription bottle and scattered pills were also observed near her.
One of the couple’s dogs, a German shepherd, was found deceased in a kennel close to Arakawa. However, two other dogs appeared healthy and had access to a doggy door, according to officials.
Despite the unusual scene, authorities have not found any indications of forced entry, theft, or an overt crime. The home’s front door was open when a maintenance worker initially discovered the scene, but officials have not determined whether that detail is significant.
No Immediate Evidence of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Fire department personnel checked the residence for possible carbon monoxide exposure, but initial tests did not detect any leaks. However, investigators noted that if there had been carbon monoxide in the home, it may have dissipated before emergency responders arrived. The New Mexico Gas Company also examined the property and found no signs of gas line issues.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza emphasized that authorities are keeping all possibilities open, but no direct evidence of foul play has been found. He confirmed that Hackman and Arakawa had likely been deceased for a period before being discovered, though an exact timeframe has not been determined.
Family Statement and Investigation Ongoing
Hackman’s family released a statement expressing their grief, noting that while he was beloved for his work in film, he was, above all, a father and grandfather to them. The investigation into the couple’s deaths remains active as authorities await further forensic results.
