Subaru Unveils 2022 WRX And New More Powerful GT Variant

The new Subaru WRX, the fifth iteration of Subaru’s rally and racing classic, will debut in 2022. The new model keeps relatively close to the previous generation’s concept, and it doesn’t appear to be much that different at first sight.

Subaru said that it is “all-new from the wheels up.” It may not be drastically different, but there’s enough to discuss, including new styling, a larger, more powerful engine, a retuned suspension, and Subaru’s newest interior and safety technology.

The original Subie is now in its latest generation, with somewhat more power, a new platform, better aesthetics, and the addition of a sportier GT variant. The new automobile is based on Subaru’s Global Platform, which presently underlies all of Subaru’s cars, with the exception of the Toyota-developed rear-wheel-drive BRZ sports coupe.

The WRX gets only 3 more horsepower for 2022. A turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four engine with 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque powers the new vehicle. The previous WRX had a turbocharged 2.0-liter four with 268 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission and a continuously variable automatic transmission are available (CVT).

Adaptive dampers with comfort, normal, and sport drive modes, suede Recaro front seats with red stitching, and GT-specific 18-inch matte gray wheels wrapped in summer rubber are all available on the new GT model. An STI variant with about 400 horsepower is likely to be added to the range soon.

The new car’s interior is centered on an 11.6-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The previous model featured a 6.5-inch screen as standard, with a 7.0-inch screen available as an option. The new WRX sports a black interior with red stitching and carbon fiber elements, similar to the previous model, and an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is offered.

The basic, Premium, Limited, and GT variants of the 2022 Subaru WRX will go on sale early next year. Those hoping for a hatchback will be disappointed, as Subaru claims it will only be available as a sedan for this generation.
