Toyota Unveils All-New Twin-Turbo V6-Powered 2022 Toyota Tundra

Toyota is finally unveiling an all-new version of its Tundra full-size pickup vehicle -after 14 long years. The 2022 Toyota Tundra will improve on this year’s model in several ways to make it more competitive, starting with a significant increase in technology and suspension hardware.

New Tougher, Boxier Look

In terms of its look, the truck has high ridgelines, or shoulders, on the back and front fenders, giving it a blocky appearance. The front is strong and commanding, with a similarly ridged center hood and massive grille.

The stylistic elements were dubbed “technical muscle” by Toyota designers as they tried to produce a visual “exemplification of toughness and capability.” It might be described as congested by some. While it looks comparable to GMC’s equally busy-looking Sierra, it will stand out among the segment’s other full-size trucks.

Tougher Platform

The truck’s architecture also underwent substantial modifications. To increase stability and towing capabilities, engineers expanded the rear frame member. To provide more strength and stiffness, they increased the size of the frame cross members.

The steering gearbox features a new front cross element on the revised Tundra. To save weight, the designers utilized aluminum in several parts of the frame and body. Although Toyota has not yet released precise specs, it is somewhat broader and longer than the existing model.

Goodbye Toyota V8s

Tundra customers will get an option of two engines, both of which will be paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Both engines are V6, marking the Tundra’s first six-cylinder option since 2014. Even though the new engine choices are smaller than the old 5.7-liter V8, they are more powerful and have higher towing capacities than any prior Tundra.

The basic 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine will generate 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The maximum towing capacity and payload for this configuration will be 12,000 pounds and 1,940 pounds, respectively, up from 10,200 and 1,730 pounds in 2021.

The Tundra, like other Toyota vehicles, has a hybrid option that utilizes a 3.5-liter engine. The i-FORCE MAX, as Toyota puts it, is the more powerful option, with up to 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. According to Toyota, it will also be the more fuel-efficient model.

While this technology is comparable to Toyota’s previous hybrid powertrains, it is designed particularly for a truck chassis. The motor-generator is constructed in the same manner as the engine and gearbox. The payload capacity is the same as the other powertrain, however, the maximum towing capacity is reduced to 11,500 pounds.

Welcomed New Tech

Toyota has made significant advancements in technology, he claims. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection, for example, will be available on the new truck. A conventional 8-inch touchscreen will be standard, with a 14-inch screen available as an alternative. All feature higher resolutions and greater touch responsiveness than the current model.

The new truck also comes equipped with a comprehensive array of automatic driver support technologies. Forward collision warning with automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control are among the features.

Trims, Options, Release Date, and Pricing

The Tundra will be available with a four-wheel-drive system. Two four-door body variants are available: Double Cab and CrewMax. The 6.5-foot bed or the 8.1-foot bed that comes with the double cab vehicles will be available on the Double Cab versions. A 5.5-foot bed or a new 6.5-foot bed will be available on the bigger CrewMax truck models.

Five trim levels will be available: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794. The hybrid engine will be the only option for the TRD Pro. Furthermore, the i-FORCE MAX is only available in the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trim levels.

The Toyota Tundra 2022 will be available later this year. Pricing details will be released closer to the on-sale date.
