A medical transport plane carrying a young child, her mother, and four crew members crashed in a residential area of Philadelphia on Friday evening, resulting in a devastating explosion. The incident, which occurred shortly after takeoff, caused extensive damage to several homes and vehicles, though authorities have yet to confirm any survivors.
According to Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, which operated the Learjet 55, the aircraft was en route to Tijuana, Mexico, with a planned stop in Missouri. The child, a Mexican citizen, had recently completed treatment at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia and was returning home with her mother.
Video footage from local media captured the moment the aircraft went down, igniting a massive fireball upon impact. Emergency responders arrived swiftly to contain the blaze and assess the damage, while local officials issued statements expressing concern for those affected.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker described the situation as an “all-hands-on-deck” emergency, highlighting the scale of destruction in the area. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro acknowledged the likelihood of casualties and extended his condolences to those grieving.
The Mexican government confirmed that all six individuals aboard the aircraft were its citizens. Officials from both Mexico and the U.S. are expected to coordinate investigations into the cause of the crash.
This incident follows another aviation tragedy earlier in the week, when a passenger plane and a military helicopter collided midair over Washington, D.C., in what became the deadliest plane crash in the U.S. since 2009.
