U.S. President Joe Biden said Tuesday that it would be up to every American if they will want to continue to wear masks when riding public transport. Biden’s comment came a day after his administration’s bid to extend the current mask mandate on public transport was shot down by a federal judge.
The mask mandate has already been extended several times since it was implemented when the pandemic began to spread in the country. The last extension that was granted only allowed it to remain in effect until May 3.
Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, who was nominated by former President Donald Trump, argued that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already exceeded its authority under the Public Health Services Act. The case to block the mask mandate extension was originally brought to court by a group called the Health Freedom Defence Fund.
Following the ruling, the Transport Security Administration announced that it would be adhering to the decision. Officials said they would no longer be enforcing the mask mandate when it expires next month.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki commented on the decision, stating that she was disappointed at the ruling. Despite her comments, many lawmakers praised the decision, with some claiming that it was about time the mandate was removed and it should have been done much sooner.
Biden was recently asked if he planned to appeal the judge’s decision over the issue and said that he has yet to speak with CDC officials on what their next steps would be.
