Cambodia Nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize Following Thai Border Ceasefire

Cambodia has nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with helping to broker a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand after a deadly five-day border conflict last month.

In a formal letter submitted to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet praised Trump for what he described as a critical diplomatic intervention that helped end the fighting. The clashes, which erupted over a long-standing territorial dispute, left at least 43 people dead and displaced over 300,000 civilians. The violence escalated quickly from small-arms exchanges to heavy artillery and airstrikes, including the use of a Thai F-16 fighter jet.

The Cambodian government contends that a July 26 phone call by Trump to both Cambodian and Thai leadership helped break the diplomatic impasse. According to Cambodian officials, the call set the stage for a ceasefire agreement finalized two days later during talks in Malaysia, facilitated by ASEAN chair and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, alongside a delegation of Chinese mediators.

Cambodia’s nomination follows similar endorsements of Trump’s candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize from Pakistan and Israel in recent months. The move also comes shortly after Trump’s administration sharply reduced tariffs on Cambodian imports from a proposed 49 percent to 19 percent, a decision welcomed by Cambodian leaders who feared severe economic fallout for the country’s export-reliant garment sector.

The Cambodian prime minister characterized Trump’s actions as a form of “visionary diplomacy” that averted further bloodshed and created conditions for a return to peace. Cambodian officials have framed the nomination as recognition of efforts to prevent a wider regional crisis.

The Nobel Peace Prize nomination process remains confidential, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee does not confirm candidates. Eligible nominators include national lawmakers, ministers, certain academics, past laureates, and members of the committee itself. While the deadline for nominations passed on January 31, additional proposals are often submitted informally as gestures of political support or international goodwill.

Although it remains uncertain whether Trump’s name will be considered for the prize this year, the symbolic value of the nomination reflects a growing pattern among certain foreign governments using it to express gratitude or strengthen diplomatic ties. Trump has previously highlighted Nobel nominations as evidence of his leadership on global peace initiatives, including during his administration’s mediation of diplomatic agreements in the Middle East.

The ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand has held since the end of July, with both sides agreeing to increased monitoring along the contested border. No further incidents have been reported, although tensions remain high in disputed areas.
