Congress has certified President-elect Joe Biden as the winner of the U.S. presidential election. The decision came hours after pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in Washington – an attack that resulted in the deaths of four people and 52 arrests.
After police were able to remove the mob from the building, Congress resumed its session. The supporters that gathered at the building were all encouraged by U.S. President Donald Trump to stop the meet and prevent Biden from being declared the winner.
Biden’s victory was officially declared Thursday by a joint session led by Vice President Mike Pence.
Politicians called the violence at the Capitol building a “dark day” for the country and for democracy. Biden blamed the attack on Trump and his continued bid to overturn his defeat.
In a statement issued after Biden was certified, Trump said that he is willing to cooperate to an “orderly transition.”
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” Trump said.
Pro-Trump protesters stormed the Capitol steps on Wednesday and destroyed barricades surrounding the building. As the mob entered the building, lawmakers were forced to run for cover as tear gas was being fired by police officers trying to stop people from entering the session hall.
Some of the people that entered the building reportedly wore body armor. Some protesters were waving Pro-Trump banners and demanded that the results of the elections be scrapped.
Early reports said that at least four people had been killed during the attack. At least 52 people were arrested. Police were able to recover two pipe bombs after the riots.
