Data from Johns Hopkins University showed that Covid-19 cases have risen in every state in the United States. Health experts said the recent surge in new cases can be attributed to the spread of the more contagious Delta variant and the slowdown in nationwide vaccinations.
Health experts said movements and gatherings during the Fourth of July weekend were also a contributing factor. While more than 70% of the adult population had already received their first shot, the Delta variant is still making its way through unvaccinated clusters.
In Arkansas, which currently has the lowest vaccination rates in the nation, hospitals are struggling to cater to the surge in patients suffering from Covid-19 symptoms.
“Hospitals are full and “cases are doubling every 10 days,” Cam Patterson, chancellor of the University of Arkansas for Medical Science said.
The Biden administration said it has already deployed “surge response teams” to heavily affected states with high Covid-19 cases counts and low vaccination rates. Efforts are also being taken to encourage skeptics and to mitigate the spread of misinformation regarding the vaccine.
The U.S. currently still has the world’s highest number of Covid-19 cases and deaths. As of Friday, the country has a total of 34,888,864 cases and 624,240 deaths since the pandemic began. More than 534 new cases were recorded in Mississippi and 337 new cases in Pennsylvania Friday.
