Rescue workers are still attempting to locate survivors Friday after part of a residential building in South Florida collapsed. Police said at least one person has been confirmed to have died.
Police said at least 35 people have been rescued from the building, including two people that were stuck under tons of rubble. Authorities said they are still not sure how many people were inside the building when it collapsed.
“Over 80 MDFR units including #TRT (Technical Rescue Teams) are on scene with assistance from municipal fire departments,” Miami Dade Fire Rescue said.
A report from CBS Miami said one boy was plucked under debris and at least nine people had sustained injuries and were sent to the hospital.
Several people were able to get video and photos of the collapse when it happened. One Miami-based journalist went live on Twitter while filming the horrific scene. In one photo, he said in the caption that it was a really tough situation to document.
According to Surfside police, the building that collapsed was located at 8777 Collins Avenue. The building was a seaside condominium originally built in 1981. The condominium was mostly occupied, with a few two-bedroom units currently on the market valued at between $600,000 and $700,000.
A report from The Wall Street Journal said the condominium was located just one block away from a building leased by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue set up a hotline for people that had family that lived in the building. Those who had family members who are unaccounted for or are safe are being requested to call 305-614-1819.
