Florida Man In Body Armor Shoots And Kills Four In Random Shooting Rampage

A man in Florida wearing full body armor fatally shot four individuals, including a mother and her 3-month-old infant. After a shootout with officers and deputies, the gunman, a former Marine, was injured and surrendered. After being shot seven times, an 11-year-old girl also survived.

Even after 33-year-old Bryan Riley was captured Sunday morning, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd stated during a news conference that he was so violent that he tried to grab a pistol from officers as he lay on his hospital stretcher.

Riley, a sniper who fought in both Iraq and Afghanistan, appears to have picked his victims at random and looked to be suffering from mental health difficulties, according to Judd. Riley’s girlfriend told investigators Riley had been gradually unraveling for weeks and had often claimed her he could speak directly with God.

According to early evidence, 40-year-old Justice Gleason was out mowing his lawn on Saturday night when Riley drove past his home in Lakeland, roughly 30 miles east of Tampa, claiming God ordered him to stop because Gleason’s daughter was ready to commit suicide.

A second, unnamed individual challenged Riley, telling him his statement was false and threatening to call the cops if he didn’t leave, according to Judd.

Riley returned to the residence nine hours later, at 4:30 a.m., putting out glowsticks to form a route leading to the house to lure cops “into an ambush,” according to Judd.

When a lieutenant heard popping noises in the distance, he quickly activated the agency’s active shooter mode, summoning all state and local law enforcement in the vicinity to the site.

Authorities arrived at the residence after hearing gunshots and discovered Riley’s white vehicle blazing and an unarmed Riley outside, dressed in camouflage.

Riley dashed inside, where officers heard more gunshots, “a woman cry, and a baby whimper,” according to Judd.

Officers attempted to enter the residence through the front door, but it was blocked. Riley seemed to have put on full body armor, including head and knee covers, as well as a bulletproof vest, as they circled around to the back.

Riley fled back into the house after authorities exchanged heavy gunfire, with dozens “if not hundreds” of bullets fired, according to the sheriff.

Everything was silent until a helicopter unit notified officials on the ground that Riley was on his way out, according to Judd. He’d been shot before and was ready to give up. The 11-year-old girl had been shot at least seven times when a sergeant ran in and snatched her.

She informed authorities there were three deceased individuals inside, according to Judd, who added that she was transported to the hospital and expected to live.

They discovered the deaths of Gleason, his 33-year-old mother, the baby, and the infant’s 62-year-old grandmother, who was in a different residence nearby. Only Gleason’s name was revealed, with no indication of whether or not he was linked to the other fatalities. The family dog also was shot to death.

Riley’s four-year girlfriend, who he lived with, was cooperative and startled, according to authorities, who claimed he was never aggressive but suffered from PTSD and had grown more unpredictable.
