President Trump revokes Biden’s security clearance, citing precedent set in 2021. The move extends to other former officials, sparking political debate.

Trump Moves to Revoke Biden’s Security Clearance

In a move mirroring past actions, President Donald Trump announced he is revoking Joe Biden’s security clearance and access to intelligence briefings. Trump, who re-entered office last month, stated that his predecessor had set the precedent in 2021 by blocking him from classified updates.

“There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information,” Trump posted on his Truth Social account. He justified the decision by pointing to an inquiry into Biden’s handling of sensitive documents, which found no criminal wrongdoing but raised concerns about his memory.

A Precedent Set in 2021

In 2021, shortly after taking office, Biden denied Trump access to intelligence briefings, a courtesy typically extended to former presidents. At the time, Biden argued Trump’s behavior, particularly surrounding the Capitol riot, made him untrustworthy with sensitive information. Now, Trump has used similar reasoning, citing Biden’s alleged memory lapses as documented in a Justice Department investigation.

Widening the Scope

Trump has also rescinded security clearances for multiple former officials linked to the Biden administration. Among them are retired General Mark Milley, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Anthony Fauci, who led the U.S. response to COVID-19. Both had been outspoken critics of Trump.

Additionally, the administration has revoked security access for former intelligence officials who, in 2020, signed a letter suggesting that reports about Hunter Biden’s laptop were part of a Russian disinformation campaign. Subsequent investigations confirmed the laptop and its contents were real.

Political Repercussions

The decision is expected to deepen political tensions in Washington, particularly as Trump continues to challenge policies enacted during Biden’s tenure. Critics argue the move is politically motivated, while supporters see it as a necessary step to ensure national security.

Biden has not publicly responded to Trump’s decision. The White House has also not confirmed whether legal action will be pursued to contest the revocation.
