Fiji is now imposing a nationwide curfew to stop all non-essential activities as category 5 Tropical Cyclone Yasa makes landfall. The storm – one of the strongest to hit the island nation – is expected to bring heavy rain and extremely strong winds.
Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama told residents Thursday that they should evacuate to higher ground as the storm could flood low-lying areas. He said that the storm will engulf the entire Fiji archipelago and all residents should be prepared.
The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that the storm will likely knock down buildings and houses along its path. Even well-built structures could face “severe damage,” the agency said.
Cyclone Yasa is expected to bring winds of up to 240kph – equivalent to a category 4 hurricane. Power lines and trees will likely be uprooted and billions of dollars worth of damage are expected.
Cyclone Yasa is significantly stronger that Cyclone Winston, which hit Fiji in 2016. The storm killed more than 40 people and left thousands homeless.
Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office said that it is preparing for the worst and rescue personnel are ready to provide aid where needed. The country has already declared a “state of natural disaster.”
