A knife-wielding lunatic went on a rampage on a Japanese train Sunday. The man, who is now in custody, reportedly told authorities he hoped to face the death penalty for his actions.
The man, identified as 24-year-old Kyota Hattori, told detectives he just wanted to die. The man injured 17 people were during the incident. Before he was arrested, the man photographed sitting cross-legged and enjoying a cigarette on a Tokyo train that he’d also set on fire.
Hattori reportedly told police that he had screwed up at work around June and wasn’t getting along with his friends. He told police that he thought he would get the death penalty if he killed two or more people.
Hattori allegedly poured pesticide into the eyes of a 72-year-old man on the express train next to him, then attempted to kill him by stabbing him in the chest with a 12-inch knife.
He admitted to police that he intended to murder the victim, who is now in serious condition after the knife penetrated his lung. Officials claimed he then proceeded to another car, where he dispersed lighter fluid and set fire to the seats and the surrounding area.
Hattori admitted to being inspired by a previous Tokyo train assault in August that left ten people hurt, saying that the cooking oil used at the time did not spread.
Hattori told police that the previous case inspired him to target an express train, which has more passengers. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said Hattori could be facing an attempted murder charge.
While shooting incidents are uncommon in Japan, a series of high-profile knife homicides have occurred in recent years. A man with two knives assaulted a gathering of schoolgirls waiting for a bus outside of Tokyo in 2019, killing two people and wounding 17 others before killing himself. In 2016, a former employee at a disabled-housing facility killed 19 individuals and wounded over 20 others.
