Nepal Floods Kill More Than 100, With Dozens Still Missing

Nepalese officials continued their search for those who had gone missing as a result of last week’s torrential rains, floods, and landslides.

According to police spokesperson Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, the death toll in the country’s eastern and western regions has surpassed 100. Landslides and home collapses have injured at least 40 people. Authorities said at least 41 others are believed to be still missing.

The rain has stopped in some areas, and the weather in the Himalayan nation is predicted to improve throughout the weekend.

Heavy rains in neighboring India this week also wreaked devastation, killing at least 88 people and flooding highways, collapsing bridges, and producing landslides that carried away numerous homes.

The rain has stopped in some areas, and the weather in the Himalayan nation is predicted to improve throughout the weekend. Authorities were still attempting to figure out how many people had been displaced and how much damage had been done.

Heavy rains in neighboring India this week also wreaked devastation, killing at least 88 people and flooding highways, collapsing bridges, and producing landslides that destroyed several homes.

Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba visited flood-stricken communities in the western region on Thursday and pledged a government rescue package. However, many families claimed they were still waiting for government supplies and were enduring on their own.

Azmat Ulla of the International Federation of Red Crescent Societies in Nepal said the calamities have wiped away crops and houses, giving a blow to communities already struggling with the terrible effects of the COVID-19 epidemic. Aid groups such as Red Cross personnel are reportedly on the ground in both countries assisting in evacuation efforts.

In India’s Himalayan region, landslides and floods are common. However, scientists said that these events are now becoming increasingly frequent as glaciers melt due to global warming.

Flash floods in northern India’s Uttarakhand state killed around 200 people and wiped away homes in February. Thousands of people were killed in flooding in the area in 2013.
