Russia Responds With Missile Attack Following German Tank Pledge

On Thursday, Russia launched a series of missiles at Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of 11 people and injuries to 11 others. 35 buildings across several regions were struck, with the worst damage reported in the Kyiv region.

Two energy facilities in the Odesa region were also hit. The missile attack came in response to recent pledges of military support from Germany, the US, and the UK to aid Ukraine’s fight against the invasion. Russia views this support as “direct” Western involvement in the conflict.

The Ukrainian army reported that Moscow launched 55 air and sea-based missiles, 47 of which were shot down. The attack was a continuation of Russia’s ongoing strategy of targeting Ukraine’s infrastructure, which has resulted in power stations being destroyed and millions losing electricity during the winter. In response to the strikes, emergency power cuts were implemented in Kyiv and other regions. The freezing winter has seen power stations destroyed and millions plunged into darkness.

A day before the attack, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz committed to providing Ukraine with 14 advanced Leopard 2 tanks, which have gained a reputation as some of the most effective battle tanks in the world, after facing weeks of international pressure. The tanks are expected to be delivered by late March or early April.

Following the announcement, President Joe Biden announced that the US would be sending 31 M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine, reversing previous arguments by the Pentagon that they were not suitable for the Ukrainian battlefield. Canada also announced plans to supply Ukraine with four “combat-ready” Leopard tanks and training for Ukrainian soldiers in the near future.
