A gunman opened fire at a university in Russia and killed at least eight people. Authorities said at least two dozen others were injured, including some students who jumped out of second-story windows in an apparent attempt to flee the attacker.
Perm State University in Perm, about 700 miles east of Moscow, was the scene of the shooting. Russian authorities said the suspect is a student at the university. The shooter has been detained and was treated at a hospital following the incident. Local media said that ahead of the attack, the suspect had posted to social media saying he was motivated by hatred, not politics or religion.
Staff and students locked themselves in rooms during the attack after a warning was announced of an armed shooter. Video showing students leaping from second-floor windows went viral on the internet.
Only about 3,000 of the school’s 12,000 total enrolled students were on campus at the time of the shooting. Russia’s Health Ministry said eight were dead and 24 had been hurt — 19 of them by gunfire.
Mass shootings in Russia are rare given the country’s strict gun laws. The country’s Investigative Committee said the shooter legally purchased the weapon used in the attack – a hunting rifle – in May. The university press service said the weapon was designed to fire non-lethal rubber or plastic projectiles. Experts said that this type of weapon could be modified to fire other types of ammunition.
In May, a similar attack occurred in the city of Kazan, in Tatarstan, when a 19-year-old gunman opened fire inside a school. Seven students were killed, including a teacher and a school worker.
In 2018, a fourth-year student at the college killed 20 people and wounded 70 others at Kerch Polytechnic College in Crimea. The shooter committed suicide before he could be arrested.
