Top government officials confirmed that a military coup attempt in Sudan had failed on Tuesday. Officials said the majority of the officers involved in the coup have been detained.
According to one senior government source, some 40 officers were detained after attempting to take over the public broadcaster’s television facilities and the military general command. Sudan’s soldiers have been spread around the capital, Khartoum, following the attempt.
Sudanese Minister of Information and Media spokesperson, Hamza Bloul, stated the situation in the nation is now “fully under control.” He said remnants of the former regime were responsible for the coup attempt. Bloul called the public to remain cautious.
“We are calling on the Sudanese people to be vigilant and to be aware of the repeated attempts against the honorable December Revolution,” Bloul said.
Omar Bashir, Sudan’s longstanding leader, was deposed in a military coup in April 2019 after a long public movement. He was sentenced to two years in prison in December 2019 after being found guilty of corruption and illicit possession of foreign money.
According to a statement released by the Sudanese government, Bashir will be handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) together with other authorities sought in connection with the Darfur war. Sudan’s long-serving president is accused of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity related to the war.
