Thousands Of Afghans Flee As Taliban Completes Kabul Takeover

After the Taliban marched into the Afghanistan capital city of Kabul and declared the war over, thousands of residents flocked to airports in a desperate bid to flee the country.

On Monday, Taliban fighters began patrolling the streets of Kabul as thousands fled from their homes to the nearest airport. Most fear the group’s rule, which emphasizes a harsh interpretation of Islamic law. This includes barring women from going to school or working. It also includes legal public executions.

Several nations have also scrambled to evacuate their diplomats and some local Afghan staff members. Local media reports said the airport in the city is now in chaos.

Footage of people clinging to the outside of departing airplanes, including a U.S. Air Force aircraft, has become viral online. One video showed people hanging onto the plane’s landing gear, while another showed two people falling to their deaths after the plane departed.

Footage of the situation at the city’s airport has also become viral. One video showed thousands of people fighting to get into a moving airplane as it taxied through the runway.

The United Nations Security Council urged other countries Monday to accept Afghan refugees. The countries also called on Afghanistan’s neighbors to refrain from deporting refugees at this time.

The Taliban is reportedly now preparing to form a new government in Afghanistan. The raid on the capital comes as the U.S. and NATO exit the country after nearly two decades of military presence and a war that is estimated to have cost more than $1 trillion.

Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem said the group intends to create a new Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. He said the new government will not rule the nation in isolation. He added that the new Emirate wants to conduct talks with other countries to help it build an “open and inclusive Islamic government.”
