Americans marked the nation’s 250th Independence Day with celebrations stretching from coast to coast, even as severe weather, extreme heat, and isolated incidents disrupted festivities in several parts of the country. Despite canceled events, emergency evacuations, and scattered fires, millions gathered to commemorate the milestone with parades, concerts, fireworks, and community celebrations.
The largest national celebration took place in Washington, D.C., where thousands assembled on the National Mall for an evening program that culminated in an expansive fireworks display shortly before midnight. The event was briefly thrown into uncertainty when severe thunderstorms approached the capital, forcing officials to evacuate attendees from the National Mall as lightning moved into the area.
Crowds sought temporary shelter inside nearby museums, government buildings, restaurants, and other public spaces before authorities declared the area safe several hours later. Attendees returned through lengthy security checkpoints ahead of President Donald Trump’s late evening address, which proceeded after the weather delay. The celebration concluded with a large fireworks display over the nation’s capital.
Across the country, communities adapted to challenging conditions. Triple digit temperatures and high humidity affected many regions, prompting officials to cancel or shorten parades, festivals, and outdoor gatherings, particularly along the East Coast. In several western states, fireworks displays were called off because of elevated wildfire risks caused by dry conditions.
In New York City, officials responded to a small fire that briefly broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge during the annual Macy’s fireworks show. Authorities said the blaze was quickly extinguished and early assessments suggested it was likely caused by fireworks debris. No major injuries were reported, and the bridge reopened after emergency crews completed their response.
Elsewhere, traditional Independence Day events continued with strong public participation. Historic reenactments took place in Philadelphia, sailing vessels traveled along the Hudson River in New York, rural communities hosted hometown parades, and concerts and festivals attracted large crowds in cities across the country. In Alaska, hundreds participated in the annual Mount Marathon race, one of the state’s signature Fourth of July traditions.
The anniversary also highlighted the country’s diversity and evolving identity. At Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia, 75 immigrants from more than 30 countries became United States citizens during a naturalization ceremony held on the grounds of Thomas Jefferson’s historic estate. The ceremony underscored the nation’s continuing tradition of welcoming new citizens during one of its most symbolic national holidays.
