A man armed with multiple weapons opened fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, injuring a law enforcement officer and triggering the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other senior officials from the event.
The incident unfolded inside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton, where journalists, government officials and guests had gathered for the annual dinner. According to authorities, the suspect approached a security checkpoint before gunfire erupted. Secret Service agents quickly intervened and subdued the individual, who was taken into custody.
Officials later identified the suspect as a 31-year-old man from California. Law enforcement sources said he was armed with more than one weapon, though details about his motive remain under investigation. Prosecutors indicated he is expected to face charges in federal court.
At least one officer was struck during the confrontation. Authorities said the officer survived because of protective gear and is in stable condition. No other serious injuries were immediately reported, though the incident caused panic among attendees.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as several gunshots rang out from the back of the ballroom shortly after the program had begun. Guests dropped to the floor or took cover under tables as security personnel moved swiftly to secure the area. Video from the event shows armed agents entering the room and escorting the president from the stage within seconds.
The president had been seated alongside First Lady Melania Trump and was preparing to deliver remarks. Other high-ranking officials in attendance included Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr..
Following his evacuation, Trump addressed reporters at the White House, praising the rapid response by federal agents and local law enforcement. He confirmed that all members of his administration who attended the dinner were unharmed. The event, which traditionally brings together political leaders and members of the press, will be rescheduled.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the president was the intended target. Investigators are continuing to examine the suspect’s background and any potential connections or motivations. Officials said more information would be released as the inquiry progresses.
The shooting adds to a series of recent security concerns involving the president. Trump has faced prior threats, including an attempted assassination during a campaign rally in 2024 and another incident later that year.
